An Infinite God
It is hard for the human mind to comprehend things in the extreme. We can’t really comprehend the $34.7 trillion in US Debt. Even less can we comprehend a light year (the distance light travels in a year) or the extreme size of our universe. Even advanced scientists have trouble comprehending how small an atom is and how little actual, physical matter is in all of the things we see and touch. None of us can truly understand how we can live for eternity with Jesus.
Because of our inability to comprehend these extremes, we can’t fully understand how awesome is our infinite, creator God. We look at Him as just an advanced human. We think He is like us, but just a little bit stronger and smarter. We don’t really see Him as He really is and therefore don’t understand the gravity of our sin or how much He truly deserves our worship. Christians do not serve a small God. We serve an AWESOME God.
The God of the Bible spoke time & space, matter & energy, things seen & unseen into being with His mind and His word. He is all powerful. The only thing limiting His power is His morality. He is outside of time and space and therefore not limited by them. He can see and fully understand all that ever happened and all that ever will happen. Nothing happens contrary to His will. He can turn the worst situation into a blessing. He can use a minor personal choice to change the world. He knows all and can see the end result of every action we make.
Knowing that this all powerful God limited Himself, came down to Earth in a human body, lived the perfect life that we are unable to live, and died to take away our sins and our reproach should humble us. We should gratefully submit to His will in thankfulness and awe. We should trust Him as Savior and trust Him with our lives. Knowing that He raised Himself from the dead three days after His death, conquering death, should make us bow down in humble awe and change everything about our lives. It should make us eager to obey His every command and seek to follow Him wherever He leads.
I am grateful for my love of science because it has helped me to see how great my creator God is. I didn’t used to have nearly high enough view of Him (and still it isn’t high enough). I trusted Him; I believed in Him; but I didn’t revere Him. God expecting worship seemed somewhat egotistical to me because it would be egotistical if another person expected worship. God is not just another person. He is the creator God. He is beyond anything the smartest man on Earth could ever hope to understand. He is so awesome and we are so insignificant in comparison. Despite this, Jesus loves us and sacrificed so much by limiting Himself to human form.
Christians frequently talk of how Jesus suffered and died for us, but His suffering goes way beyond Him being falsely accused, beaten, and crucified.
First of all, the God of the Bible is three people in one God (another incomprehensible trait of God). God the Father, God the Son (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit have lived for eternity as one. When Jesus took our sins on himself, He was unclean for the first time and covered with our guilt. He also was ripped from the presence and fellowship of the Godhead. This is a separation and loneliness He had never experienced before.
Also, since God is not limited in power or by time or space, limiting Himself to a frail human body would have been a hardship we cannot comprehend. Jesus went from being all powerful, all knowing, and omnipresent (everywhere in time and space at once) to being limited by a human body. In the beginning He was limited to a body in Mary’s womb. Then He was limited in a baby’s body that couldn’t walk or talk and was dependent on His parents for all of His needs. Just limiting Himself to a human body would have been torture to our awesome God, but He loved us this much. He didn’t hesitate to do this much and more for us. God is love.
I implore everyone to get right with God, to trust Jesus as savior, and to worship Him as He truly deserves. No one and nothing deserves the title awesome except our God.
Trust Jesus.
